What are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are aromatic compounds extracted from plants through a distillation process and are used in many ways, providing a variety of health benefits.

ESSENTIAL OIL SAFETY

WHAT IS THE BEST BRAND OF ESSENTIAL OILS?
Quality of oils varies by brand. Many brands use questionable sourcing and add synthetic fillers. We've tried many brands over the years but we fell IN LOVE when we started using dōTERRA! Finding a brand you can trust with quality protocol testing like CPTG Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade and dōTERRA's company platform of providing service and oil education really jives with us. OILS + UV RAYS
Some oils can react with sunlight when applied to the skin and then exposed to direct UV rays, causing a chemical type burn. Make sure to always dilute these oils well or wait 24 hours before any direct exposure to the sun (or a tanning bed!). Oils that are to watch out for phototoxicity are lemon, grapefruit, lime, bergamot, cumin, and any blends with any of these oils.
WHAT DO I DO IF I GET OIL IN MY EYE?
Use a carrier oil like fractionated coconut oil to dilute the essential oil out of your eyes. Take a bit of oil and rub it into your eye until you feel you've diluted it enough. DO NOT ADD WATER as this will only drive the oil in deeper.
WILL ESSENTIAL OILS AFFECT MY PRESCRIPTION MEDICATION?
Consult your physician and a holistic doctor or registered aromatherapist. There are a couple that truly stand out, such as wintergreen oil being avoided by those taking blood thinners, and being mindful that tetracyclines can make the skin more sensitive to citrus oil + sunlight reaction. Always do research prior to oil use.
WHAT IS A "HOT" OIL?
"Hot" oils are any oils that may be irritating or caustic to the skin: Cinnamon Bark, Clove, Citronella, Cumin, Lemongrass, Thyme, Oregano, and Cassia. To avoid possible irritation, be sure to dilute them with a carrier oil and testing them out on your skin on a small area for your initial use. The bottoms of your feet are a good place to start if you're unsure. It is also a good idea to avoid applying these oils to young babies.
SHOULD I AVOID ANY ESSENTIAL OILS WHILE PREGNANT OR NURSING?
While pregnant, avoid Cinnamon, Clove, Rosemary, Myrrh and Clary Sage, known to promote urerine contractions. Also watch out for blends that contain them. Avoid Peppermint while breastfeeding to not risk affecting your milk supply. Consult with your doctor or midwife.
CAN I USE MY ESSENTIAL OILS IN A BATH?
Always add your oils to some kind of carrier like epsom salt, unscented shower gel, or bubble bath before adding to your running water. Since oil and water don't mix, a carrier will help the oil dilute in the water. Never add a "hot" or caustic oil in your bath water. One of the best ways is to add 2-4 drops to a cup of epsom salt for a relaxing detox bath.
